Welcome to Part 4 of our discussion about hosted desktops. In Part 1 we looked at what a hosted desktop is, and the differences between Session Virtualisation and Full Virtual Desktops. In Part 2 we looked at the protocol and its impact on end user performance. In Part 3 we looked at Graphics Performance.

In this part we look at the key questions to choose your solution or provider.

Choosing Your Solution and Provider

When looking at Hosted Desktops there are a few key areas which will directly influence the user experience:

  • Are you offering Full Virtual Desktops, or are they session-based desktops?
  • Which protocol are you using, and can you optimise it to suit particular network constraints?
  • How are you accelerating the graphics?
  • Can you adjust graphics resources to suit particular applications?

These questions will confirm if you can expect an end user experience equivalent to a good physical desktop/laptop. If the answers to these questions indicate performance will be good then it is worth requesting a trial.

When choosing a Hosted Desktop provider the approach to support, resilience, uptime and security are also important, but are beyond the scope of this article.
