Broadcom is now pushing its original plan from back in 2024. They want all customers on VCF (VMware Cloud Foundation).
So what doesn't this mean?
- VVF is the minimum version allowed to run ESXi 9
- Only subscriptions can upgrade to ESXi 9
- They are setting a minimum core count of 72 cores
- ESXi 8 is EOS October 2027
On top of this, they have also terminated a load more resellers. Due to these changes, we are seeing more customers than ever reviewing their options. For those with fewer than 72 cores, it may be worth reviewing alternatives and migrating. For organisations with a tight budget with more than 72 cores, it will be worth reviewing alternatives as well.
There is still something to think about: moving away may require retraining. Also, VVF and VCF offer additional functions that you may find useful.
Some alternatives:
- Hyper-V
- Proxmox
- KVM
- Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation
- Azure local
Yes, I have left out Nutanix. Why? Pricing, and that VCF pricing is close between the two, but you get much more with VCF.

Knowing the channels and the most efficient configurations is something that not many people know about.
